Hair Loss Remedies During Pregnancy

The joy of motherhood for every woman comes with pregnancy. But, there are also some other changes that are associated with pregnancy, and one of them is loss of hair. However, some women will experience healthy hair growth, but a lot others suffer hair loss. Hormonal imbalance during pregnancy is often the cause of hair loss in women. These losses of hair differ from woman to woman; some may experience hair loss during pregnancy while some others may experience hair loss after delivery.

These hormonal side effects are only temporal and women need not panic about it as the normal cycle of hair growth will be restored within six months of pregnancy or three months after delivery as the case may be. Apart from hormonal imbalance, there could be other causes of hair loss during pregnancy such as deficiency of minerals and vitamins, or change in diet and the discontinued use of prenatal vitamin after delivery.
Although, the possibility of hair loss in women during pregnancy is almost certain and normal, there are things you can do to checkmate embarrassing loss of hair during pregnancy. Here are few things you can do to maintain a healthy hair growth during pregnancy:

  •  Healthy Diet- If you do not take a healthy diet you may witness plenty of hair loss during pregnancy. Make fruits and vegetables part of your diet. You can also supplement your diet by taking supplements like zinc, vitamin C, vitamin B complex and biotin. Add enough protein in your diet to to protect and strengthen your hair follicle.

  • Don’t pull your hair- Avoid hair styles that pull your hair like braids, cornrows, weaves, and tight ponytails. Instead make use of hair clip.
  • Be economical with styling tools- Styling tools like hot rollers, curling irons, and flat irons will require the pulling of your hair which can encourage hair loss. Avoid the use of blow dryers as well. This adds stress to the hair strands.

     Caring for wet hair
Hair is most vulnerable to breakage when it is wet.  When you wash your hair make use of shampoo and conditioner containing hair strengthening ingredients such as keratin or silica biotin. Make use of wide toothed comb to comb your wet hair.

It is important to note that hair growth is naturally made up of three stages; the growth stage in which scalp hair grows for two to six years, and then followed by the resting stage in which the hair stays in place for about three months. At the end of the resting stage is the third stage when your hair falls out. At this stage you can experience up to 100 strands of hair daily falling off. Once a strand falls out a new one grows to replace. When the replacement doesn’t happen you experience hair loss. This is what happens to most women during pregnancy due to hormonal imbalance.

You may not be able to stop hair loss caused by pregnancy, but following these simple tips above will make hair loss due to pregnancy less of a worry. However if hair loss continues six months after child birth bring the issue up with your doctor.
