Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Joints Pain



Aching joints is a common health disorder the world over. Joint pain can be caused by a number of issues with the most common causes being; inflammation, degeneration, and damage due to injury. Other reasons for joint disorder are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendinitis or a strain, and bursae or tendons surrounding a joint just to mention a few.
Joint pain can happen in any part of the body, but is common in the knees, shoulders, hips, wrist, elbow, and ankle. The symptoms range from pain, swelling, and stiffness. Others are limited range of movement, locking, tenderness, weakness, and fever.
Some joint pain can be caused by minor sprain which may go away with proper rest and some ayurvedic home remedies for joint pain.
Here are some home remedies for joint pain:
 
Oil Massage: One of the best preventive measures for degenerative arthritis is daily oil massage: 
  • Heat about one cup of sesame oil. On the larger areas of the body like the thighs and forearms, use vigorous long stroke. On the joints make use of circular movements to rub the oil into the tissues. Do this massage for at least 10minutes daily. Afterwards take a hot bath with Epsom salt to draw out toxins from the body. Other warm oils you can use are coconut, olive, castor, garlic or mustard oil.

Cayenne: Capsaicin is a natural analgesic found in cayenne with pain relieving properties: 

  • Heat ½ cup of coconut oil. Mix in two tablespoonful of cayenne powder. Apply it on the affected area, leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse it off. Do this a few times a day until you get relief from the pain. Do not apply it on open skin or wound.

Turmeric: Often referred to as the “Golden Goddess” of herbs and hailed for its efficacy in treating inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis. It contains an active ingredient called curcumin with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is an excellent remedy for joint pain: 

  • Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a little honey in a glass of warm milk. Drink it daily, at least for a few days.

Garlic: Very rich in sulfur and selenium is beneficial to those suffering from arthritis and joint pain. Sulfur aid relieve to joint pain and inflammation, selenium may have antirheumatic effect. Artheritic patients are known to have low level of selenium in the blood. 

  • Add raw or cooked garlic in your diet. You can safely consume two or three garlic cloves daily.

Epsom Salt: Epsom salt hot baths aids the absorption of magnesium through the skin.  Joint pains are often associated with low level of magnesium. Magnesium helps to reduce inflammation and the detoxification of cells.

  •  Mix two cups of Epsom salt in warm bath water.Soak in it for about 20 minutes.Repeat three times a week until you get relief from your joint pain.

Ginger: Known for its anti inflammatory properties, ginger is an excellent remedy for muscle and joint pain.  

  • Drink ginger tea, or include fresh ginger root or dried ginger powder in your daily diet. 
  • Another option is to mix equal amounts of ginger, turmeric and fenugreek powder. Take one teaspoon of this mixture daily in the morning and evening until you are satisfied with the results.

Triphala: This is an aryurveda blend of three Indian herbs(amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki)typically used to improve digestion.  It has been used in India for thousands of years for the treatment of joint pain, arthritis, muscle aches, and
rheumatism.

Tulsi: Also known as holy basil is known as an anti-rheumatic (joint pains) and antispasmodic (muscle spasms) agent. Tulsi works in relieving joint pain and pain associated with arthritis.
